In this video, Barbara Romero (research associate at the Provenance Lab, Leuphana University Lüneburg) and Luana Medina Fortes (adjunct professor at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado) share resources on how to use the Getty Union List of Artist Names® (ULAN) to parse large datasets of artists by gender, nationality, and relationships.
The Getty Vocabularies are a collection of five tools—Art & Architecture Thesaurus® (AAT), Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names® (TGN), Union List of Artist Names® (ULAN), Cultural Objects Name Authority® (CONA), and Getty Iconography Authority™(IA)—that contain structured resources for the visual arts domain, including art, architecture, decorative arts, other cultural works, archival materials, visual surrogates, and art conservation.
ULAN is an international thesaurus of names, relationships, sources, and biographical data for people and firms related to art and architecture. It is a controlled vocabulary that contains over 300,000 artists.
