German Shepherd protecting its owner from a rabid fox. Foxes are naturally fearful of humans. When you see a fox, it'll usually tuck its tail in and run quickly. After all, humans have been hunting and killing them for different reasons. Since this is the case, foxes aren’t often going to put themselves in a situation where they have to deal with a person.
Foxes are not dangerous to humans, except when they are rabid or when they are captured and handled. However, a rabid fox can be serious threat to humans and their pets. As the virus spreads through bites from an infected animal to another animal or human. There is no cure once you have been infected by the rabies virus, and the chance of surviving rabies is incredibly low.
Foxes may prey on small pets or livestock such as rabbits, guinea pigs or chickens, so pets should be kept indoors or housed in sturdy structures.
Foxes will also eat various fruits, but they usually do not bother garden vegetables. Sometimes foxes are blamed for damage they did not cause, such as when they are spotted eating from spilled trash when neighbourhood dogs or other animals were responsible for the overturned trashcan. A fox cutting through your yard is probably just passing through on their way between hunting areas and no action is necessary on your part.
Large dogs are at no risk of a fox attack. If your dog is 50 pounds or heavier, a fox is simply not going to take the risk of tussling with them.
No fox is looking at a dog two to five times its size as a meal. However, they can attack larger dogs, if they have rabies, are cornered or protecting their young ones.
And not all dog breeds were developed to fend off wild animals, so not all dog breeds are able to fight a wild animal even if it's as tiny as a fox.
As we mentioned earlier that a fox will never attack a large dog for meal, but very small dogs, anything under 15 pounds, could be at risk of being eaten. Tiny breeds, including Pugs, Boston Terriers, Chihuahuas, and any other very small dogs could potentially be attractive to a hungry fox as a meal.
Now lets talk about our video of the day. The fox was chasing couple of men , when one of them ran and stood behind his black German Shepherd dog. The dog was chained to a wall and it was a no win situation for the owner and the dog. If the owner would've let his dog loose, it surely would've given dog a better chance to defend itself from the attacking fox.
But at the same time the dog may have ended up pursuing the fox into the wild and could've got bitten over and over again by the rabid fox. The brave German Shepherd did a great job of protecting its owner by diverting fox's attention to itself. This gave both men a chance to escape without getting bitten by the fox. Luckily the fox lost its interest in the dog after attacking it few times, and ran off to the woods. According to sources, the dog was vaccinated the next day but to be honest chances of survival for someone infected with rabies are very slim. Let's hope that the dog survived and lived to tell the tale to its friends.
