The Wildlife and Cultures of Ethiopia Adventure (see www.redfernadventures.com) takes in the most incredible wildlife and cultural locations which Ethiopia has to offer.
During the itinerary, we visit the Simien Mountains, and on past trips we have seen large troops of Gelada baboons (Theropithecus gelada).
Also known as the bleeding-heart monkey, this species is the only grass eating primate and troops of up to 800 individuals may be seen foraging together.
The Gelada is not actually a baboon. It can be distinguished from a baboon by the bright patch of skin on its chest. This patch is hourglass-shaped. On males, it is bright red and surrounded by white hair; on females, it is far less pronounced.
Amazingly, Gelada baboons live at elevations of 1,800–4,400 m above sea level, particularly around grassland meadows.
The Gelada of the Simien Mountains are relatively tame, and can be approached slowly. Or, if you sit down, often the Gelada ignore you and graze the grass around you! It is an amazing sight.

![Orchids of Sulawesi Expedition
Redferns Sulawesi Orchids expedition explores the exuberant orchids and extremely rich plant diversity of this remarkable Indonesian island. In addition to remarkable endemic orchids, we will encounter spectacular pitcher plants, experience some of the island’s extraordinary tribal history and indulge in an array of fantastic local cuisine.
This expedition offers excellent opportunities to observe and photograph Sulawesi’s iconic traditional cultures and many of the island’s most spectacular animals, birds, and plants, but especially orchids and carnivorous pitcher plants. During our 2013 Sulawesi expedition, two new species of pitcher plant were discovered, along with a new species of Paphiopedilum orchid now named P. robinsonianum.
