Protecting the Small Wild Cats of South America: The GCWG 2025 Impact Report
The Geoffroyโs Cat Working Group (GCWG) is a powerful network of over 40 members including researchers and conservationists operating across six South American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Our mission is to ensure the survival of wild Geoffroyโs cat populations and other sympatric small wild cats by protecting their natural habitats and mitigating human-induced threats.
2025: A Year of Major Scientific and Conservation Milestones
In 2025, the GCWG achieved a major scientific breakthrough by solely carrying out the conservation status assessment of Leopardus geoffroyi for the IUCN Red List. This effort brought together leading experts from across the species' range to provide the most accurate data possible. Looking toward the future, members are already collaborating to work toward a future IUCN Green Status for the species.
Managing Health and Habitat
One of the most critical threats to small wild cats is the overlap with domestic dogs and cats, which leads to resource competition and the transmission of deadly pathogens like rabies, FIV, FeLV, and parvovirus
