In this video, we look at elements, compounds, mixtures and molecules. First we look at the idea of an element, using examples from the periodic table. I then show you the definition of a compound and what is meant by "fixed proportions". We then explore the definition of a mixture and the differences between mixtures and compounds. Finally, we look at what is meant by the word molecule and see how molecules can be elements or compounds.

In this video, we look at the properties of metals and of alloys. First we explore the structure of metals, looking at metallic bonding and the sea of delocalised electrons. We use this to explain why pure metals can be bent and shaped, why metals can conduct electricity and heat and why metals have high melting and boiling points. We then look at the structure of alloys and use this to explain why alloys are harder than pure metals.

In this video, we look at the alpha scattering experiment. First we look at what the ancient Greeks thought about the structure of atoms and how this was disproven by the discovery of the electron. We then explore an early model of atomic structure called the plum pudding model. Next we look at the alpha scattering experiment. We explore how the alpha scattering experiment was carried out including why gold foil was used. We then look at how the results of the alpha scattering experiment told scientists that atoms are mainly empty space, with a central positive nucleus containing most of the mass of the atom and electrons around the edge. Finally, we look at how scientists replaced the plum pudding model with the nuclear model of atomic structure.
