![AMD 6970M upgrade for 2009 iMac 27 [Video Card]
Video shows how to install a Radeon 6970M video card (from a 2011 iMac) into a late 2009 27 iMac which originally came with a 4850 graphics card. And although I dont think CPU type matters in terms of compatibility with the 6970M, please note that my CPU is an i7.
⚠️ April 27, 2020: Please read my Pinned Comment and comments tied to it for the latest info. Specifically, my son discovered a big caveat that triggers a sudden power-off of the iMac. On May 3, 2020 I released a new video that offers all the details: https://youtu.be/n2a8oEI2y6U
💳 EBAY listing of the 6970M I purchased is no longer available, but the Hong Kong sellers page is found here:
https://www.ebay.com/usr/shawn882014
🍎 Apple Forum Discussion about replacement video cards that work in the late 2009 27 iMac: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3029120
♨️ If your 2008~2011 iMacs video card is dead and youve never baked it before, I suggest you perform the bake before spending the money on a replacement video card. My BAKE VIDEOS are here: https://bit.ly/2UEOf4o
🔥 THERMAL PASTES I strongly recommend:
K4 & K5 Pro Kit: https://amzn.to/38WkEZO
-or-
K5 Pro (for chips other than GPU): https://amzn.to/33OIDJ6
& Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut (for GPU only): https://amzn.to/36NMQwu
🏥 Defective Video Card Symptoms. In my case, the iMac wouldnt boot fully and would freeze at the Apple logo screen with the progress bar only 50% finished, sometimes with screen artifacts. At times when it would boot to the desktop, there were artifacts that made using the computer impossible. In the case of my 3rd and 4th bakes though, the problem was the screen would stay dark.
🛠 TOOLS to open/close iMac:
• 2 strong suction cups for front glass removal: https://amzn.to/2tkcmvJ
• Torx T10 for LCD removal (T9 works but T10 is best) & T9 for video card removal. The following kit contains more than needed for the iMac, but its highly rated, has grippy handles and magnetic tips, and no 1 month+ wait from China: https://amzn.to/2UCaurK
-or-
Alternative kit, WRENCH style (cheaper): https://amzn.to/2wIgWWe
-or-
Alternative kit, BIT style (youll need a handle): https://amzn.to/2vRkUeC
I used the following 2 tools to cut the plastic piece inside the iMac, but any similar set of cutting tools will suffice. I just used what I had. But you should try to make straight cuts. Youll also need a pair of needle-nose pliers to rip off the cut pieces, and a razor blade Xacto knife.
• NS-04 Japanese Wire Cutters: https://amzn.to/3bEGUsJ
• Straight Cut Branch Cutters: https://amzn.to/3aAhwmV
🔦 OTHER ITEMS needed or recommended:
• Anti-static wrist strap (connect wire to earth ground): https://amzn.to/2uSTy74
• Dust blower - Giottos Rocket Blaster Large: https://amzn.to/2OgHHXt
• Microfiber cloth (for cleaning the screen/glass)
• Flashlight (to peer into the dark spaces inside the iMac)

😎 Fan Control Apps to keep your iMac running cooler (Im using both on different Macs and can therefore recommend either):
• Macs Fan Control: https://crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control
• smcFanControl: https://www.eidac.de

I show how a Dell E1715Sc 17 VGA Display connects to a Macintosh SE/30 with a Micron Xceed video card, which also provides 256 grays on the SE/30s internal CRT thanks to the Grayscale Adapter. Also shown is a CPU-socketed Daystar PowerCache 50MHz 68030 CPU & FPU accelerator, and a second, lower-end Micron Xceed PDS graphics card — the Color 30HR.

Expensive, but a truly amazing electrical contact cleaner. Trust me, your connectors will love you! It can fix some CRT display anomalies when used on the yoke board connector and CRT pins (with power off, of course), and it can clean out that greenish oxidation inside your old connectors, which can cause low voltage or intermittent lockups. Its really a must buy item. Thank goodness they sell it here in Japan too! 🙂
