Was Galileo Galilei oppressed by the Catholic Church?
The Galileo affair is one of the most misunderstood parts of the history of science and Christianity, being prevalent in popular imagination despite being rejected in scholarship for decades.
Today we’re therefore going to get an accurate description of the trial of Galileo as well as the historical context it happened in. This includes more than just fun facts on the subject.
First, we will cover the science historical context that pre-dated Galileo along with his early life and scientific career.
Next, you’ll learn about how Galileo’s run-in with the church started in 1613, the greater religious context it took place in as well as why the inquisition took such peculiar interest in Galileo and his discussions on cosmology and biblical interpretation.
Finally, we will cover the event leading up to Galileo’s trial and condemnation as well as discussing whether the conflict between Galileo and the catholic church should be seen as emblematic of the church’s historical relationship to science.
After watching this Galileo documentary, you’ll have a better understanding of the Galileo affair as well as about the history of science and Christianity in general.
