BMW CIC: DIY sled from a 2.5 HD for a cheap IDE to CF adapter, replacing the OEM HD (E60 etc.) Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 2025-03-29 | The Toshiba HD for the BMW CIC (Car Infotainment computer) has a finite lifetime, so it's good preventative maintenance to replace it.The CIC runs many essential features in the car (more than just maps and music), if the HD fails and you don't have an image of it, you'll need a new CIC, and to have it coded to the car.I discuss:- How to make a DIY sled for the cheap IDE to CF adapter (one with a 2.5" sled is a hassle to get where I'm at)- Why not use an mSATA (or IDE to SATA etc.) adapter, the CIC OS doesn't support TRIM.One thing I left out here is a potentially much easier method: Use pliers to carefully insert the bare adapter itself (good to do this initially for testing). Very happy with Neonate customer support END UPDATE I made this video to share with Neonate support, who said it was under warranty in principle (might be void now, but couldn't resist opening it).They use a 8mm by 3mm vibration motor. As the video shows the monitor alternates between giving it 0V and 2.33V DC (or thereabout).The nominally 3.7V battery puts out 4.11V (4.10V for the child monitor battery). Some of the motors I found (e.g. "5PCS Mini 8mm*3mm Vibration Motor DC 3V-5V 4.2V Button Type [...] Coin Flat Vibrator https://a.aliexpress.com/_EzQ4j68) are rated 3-5V, which would make more sense for the battery voltage.Without knowing what specific motor it is, and not wanting to screw around with the motherboard, I don't know if the issue is that it's not getting sufficient voltage, or that the board steps it down to around 2.33V, but the motor is just broken or worn out).Just for context, I didn't assume it would be under warranty, but contacted support to see if they'd be willing to either sell me a new motherboard or vibration motor, depending on whether the motor was replaceable (I hadn't opened it up at that time).

On this and some comnemporar models that's 61138377734 "Double leaf spring contact 4,0-6,0 MM²(AG)".Some told me to just use a fuse tap, which honestly is probably better in every way, except for that irrational part of your brain that just wants an install like this to be "clean". If you're one of those people, then this how-to is for you.Still, this was much easier than I suspected. Those crimp connectors were €1.40 a piece from my local supplier.You don't even need to remove the glove box as I've done here, at least on the E6x you could just pop off the inner footwell trim and slide a new connector into the back. I have it off because it makes this much more ergonomic, especially for routing the lines themselves.Of course for a fuse tap that's even easier, as you only need to plug something into the front.One thing not mentioned here is that if you're doing this on a model like the E6x for e.g. wiring a dashcam you need to take other precautions to ensure you don't run your battery out, as anything wired into the front fuse box (and this isn't the same on E9x and various other models) *will* run down the battery to 0% unless switched in some other way.In my case I'm using this in combination with the hardwire kit for my dashcam (a VIOFO A129 Pro Duo). The camera itself has a "parking" setting with a timeout.It can detect that the car is "parked" because the hardwire kit comes with both a live "battery" line (which I'm hardwiring here), and a "parking detection" line. The latter you wire into some line that's switched already, I spliced it into one of the power lines going to the mirror. It also has a hardware voltage cutoff setting, which I've set to the right voltage after some experimenting.

Miele TwinDos DIY refillable detergent & fabric softener canisters (1/2) Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 2020-03-25 | This video shows how to make refillable Miele TwinDos canisters for the detergent & fabric softener slots.Tools used:- Sewing needle & thread- Scissors- Power drill & 12mm drillbit (or another way to make a 12mm hole in plastic)- Carpenter's knife (or another way to smooth out the drilled hole)At around 4m40s in the video I screwed up and drilled through the bottom of the canister, which would have caused it to leak. That was easily fixed with some plastic glue & duct tape.Note that the cap added to the canister is only semi-watertight, I'm careful not to turn them upside down or stand them on their sides. It holds, but I don't really trust it. It's not a problem because there's no reason to ever orient them differently.It's VERY IMPORTANT when refilling the canisters not to overfill them. They're inserted at an incline into the machine, and the vent hole is in the front, therefore having too much detergent or fabric softener will block the vent hole, and the machine will only be able to suck out a little bit before negative pressure in the canister blocks any further extraction of the soap. See the last 30 seconds or so for the approximate fill limit (the label was custom added with a labeling machine I have).See youtu.be/FiZFQDTRuXU for the results.
