7 Aermacchi MB-339NAT jets of 'Fursan Al Emarat' - the United Arab Emirates Air Force national aerobatic display team, flying at RAF Fairford on the Sunday of The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) 2023. This was the teams first appearance at RIAT since 2012.
Fursan Al Emarat (Arabic: فرسان الامارات - in English 'The Knights of the Emirates') is the aerobatics display team of the United Arab Emirates Air Force and Air Defence. The team has a total of seven aircraft that symbolizes 7 Emirates, all seven of which are used for international airshows.
The UAE Air Force decided to establish an aerobatic team in the late 2000s, and looked to existing well-established teams in Europe. They made a deal with Italy, buying a fleet of second-hand MB-339s for the team, which was established in 2010. Team members were trained by the Italian Air Force 'Frecce Tricolori', who fly the same type of aircraft, at their home base in Rivolto, Italy. Al Fursan debuted at the Dubai Airshow in 2011. The MB-339 has no other roles within the UAE Air Force, being used only for airshow duties.
Al Fursan made their international debut in 2012, at the Royal International Air Tattoo in the UK.
The team is now renamed as the 'Fursan Al Emarat' Squadron.
The Aermacchi MB-339 is an advanced jet trainer and light attack aircraft developed specifically for the Italian Air Force to replace the MB-326. The original version began deliveries in 1979 with the final MB-339A being delivered to the Italian Air Force in 1995. There have been various versions of the MB-339 produced including the modernised MB-339C/CD for Italy which also posses a light attack capability plus the specialised aerobatic MB-339PAN built specifically for the Frecce Tricolori display team. The MB-339 has proved popular with a number of air forces including New Zealand who received their aircraft in 1991. Upon retiring their combat aircraft fleet in 2002, a number of RNZAF examples were acquired by Draken International who fly them as adversary aircraft.
