Matthew Greenwood | Fungi ~ red cage fungus (Clathrus Ruber) @mmmatthewww | Uploaded September 2010 | Updated October 2024, 19 hours ago.
A very unusual and beautiful fungus that is definitely a bit weird in appearance. It is a member of the 'stinkhorn' family of fungi. It is also commonly referred to as 'Latticed Stinkhorn' or 'Basket Stinkhorn'. It emits a rather foul smell not unlike that of rotten meat, so not a winner in that department. Flies are attracted to it and are the carriers of the red cage fungus' spores. The red cage fungus is usually found in mulch beds. Kingdom: Fungi
Division: Basidiomycota
Class: Agaricomycetes
Order: Phallales
Family: Phallaceae
Genus: Clathrus
Species: C. ruber
