Team La Bomba at the 2011 12 Hours of Sebring. Team La Bomba is located at Turn 11, Collier Curve, just in front of the Oak Trees. This was the La Bomba ArtCar's 15th anniversary at the 12 Hours of Sebring. 2011 also marked the first year that Sebring officially sanctioned a Cruiser/Campsite contest at the 12 Hours of Sebring. La Bomba did prevail in the Cruiser Contest at the 12 Hours of Sebring against some very worthy challengers, and our friends at Turn 10 won the Campsite Contest at the 12 Hours of Sebring. It was a great race week at the 12 Hours of Sebring with perfect weather thoughout, and a very large and competitive field of cars entered in the 12 Hours of Sebring Race. We had the pleasure of meeting Allan McNish, who co-drove the #2 Audi R15+ at the 12 Hours of Sebring with drivers Tom Kristensen and Dindo Capello, when he spotted La Bomba and shot some of his own personal video which you can see on his website at: AllanMcNish.com - Team La Bomba was invited by Greg Harris, president of the Greater Sebring Chamber of Commerce, and Barry Foster - local Sebring radio personality - to be part of the tradition of having race cars cruise into downtown Sebring, from the track at the 12 Hours of Sebring, and park around the circular park in the center of town for a meet and greet with the public. It was loads of fun and we had the pleasure of meeting the lovely and gracious Katie Haviland, who was crowned 'Miss 12 Hours of Sebring 2011'. Also worthy of noting is the motorized couch seen for the first time at the 12 Hours of Sebring. The first time I saw the motorized couch guys zippy around the paddock at the 12 Hours of Sebring, I didn't have my camera. I finally tracked down their camp somewhere near Turn 3, but the couch was in for repairs. Later that day I was finally able to film them from the deck of La Bomba as we crossed paths along the North Paddock Trail. The motorized couch is an instant classic at the 12 Hours of Sebring! Incidentally, that's a paddle-ball table attached to the front of the couch rig. Also, had to give some face time to the 12 Hours of Sebring Cougars and Kittens, who were making the rounds. Update: Congratulations to Audi and the team of the Audi R-18 car#2 driven by Benoit Treluyer, Marcel Fassler and Andre Lotterer for their stunning and thrilling 13 seconds win, after 24 Hours of racing, over the Peugeot 908 at the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans. Thankfully, Allan McNish survived a horrific crash of his Audi R18 in the first hour of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The crash of Allan McNish and his Audi R18 was caused by making contact with a Ferrari when the Ferrari driver didn't see Allan McNish driving under him into a corner and the two made contact, sending Allan McNish and his Audi R18 into a high-speed backwards slide into a tire barrier with the resulting impact tearing his car apart. Allan McNish escape the carnage with nary an injury and also non of the photographers in the area were injured as well. The #1 Audi R18 driven by Mike Rockenfeller also sustained a horrific and terrifying crash in the night time hours. Mike Rockenfeller was held overnight in a hospital for observation. It was an incredible sight to see the one remaining Audi R18 - Car #2 with drivers Benoit Treluyer, Marcel Fassler and Andre Lotterer (Andre Lotterer piloting the final laps) soldier on to an overall win in a very close duel with the Peugeot 908.
The ALMS Patron series now moves from the 12 Hours of Sebring onto Long Beach (4/15-4/16) - Lime Rock -Northeast Grand Prix (7/8-7/9) - Grand Prix of Motorsport - Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada (7/22-7/24) - Mid Ohio Sports Car Challenge (8/4 - 8/6) - Road America - Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (8/18-8/20) - Baltimore Grand Prix (9/2-9/3) - Monterey - Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (9/15-9/17) and finishing up the season at the Petit LeMans - Braselon, GA.
