The weather wasn’t too hot for hundreds of folks to gather Tuesday on the grounds of Allandale Mansion to paint barrels for Fun Fest.

Nearly 500 barrels were painted at the annual Keep Kingsport Beautiful Trash Barrel Paint-In, and those barrels will be distributed to the many Fun Fest events starting this Friday. The barrels are supplied by Domtar Packaging, which sponsors the event.

“This is always a fun day for families and friends to gather together and paint,” said Keep Kingsport Beautiful director Sharon Hayes. “The Trash Barrel Paint-In was started in 1985, and today, many of the folks who painted barrels as children, come back to the event to paint barrels with their own children. It’s a wonderful tradition to carry on.”

Barrels were judged by age category. The results of the judging were as follows:

In the under 6 years old category, first place went to Hazel Byerley, age 4; second place went to Avy Murphy, age 5; and third place went to Shiloh Fletcher, age 6.

In the 6- to 8-year-old category, first place went to Girl Scout Troop 1088; second place went to Ella Frost, age 7; and third place went to Madelyn, age 8 (no last name provided).

In the 9- to 11-year-old category, first place went to Eden Boyd; second place went to Paxton Campbell; and third place went to Natalie Hammonds.

In the 12- to 17-year-old category, first place went to Ellie Carpenter; second place went to Vivian Littell; and third place went to Ethan Owen.

In the age 18 and over category, first place went to Tanner Looney; second place went to Mariane Bush; and third place went to Carla Greer.

In the family category, first place went to the Tesla family; second place went to the Kasie Lackey family; and third place went to the Butler family.

In the best overall barrel category, first place went to Mary Lyons; second place went to Allie Fletcher; and third place went to Lyrik Johnson.
