On Easter Sunday, 1972, while in Vietnam as an adviser to the South Vietnamese Marines, Colonel Ripley single-handedly destroyed a bridge near the city of Dong Ha, blunting a major North Vietnamese offensive. For his heroism he was awarded the Navy Cross (there is a great hope that Col. Ripley will be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor).
