Cow Missing | FULL RIDE - Mario Kart Bowser's Challenge Super Nintendo World Universal Studios Hollywood (2024) 4K @cowmissing | Uploaded August 2024 | Updated October 2024, 13 hours ago.
Here’s the complete point-of-view (POV) experience of the Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge ride at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge, known in Japan as Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge, is an augmented reality dark ride featured in Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Hollywood, with another version planned for Universal Epic Universe. The Mario Kart franchise inspires the ride, particularly Mario Kart 8.
Over several years, the attraction's design and details were gradually revealed through leaked photos, patents, and construction updates. Universal officially acknowledged the ride in the "We Are Born to Play" music video released on January 13, 2020, though full details remained under wraps. The ride was formally unveiled on November 30, 2020, and opened at Universal Studios Japan’s Super Nintendo World on March 18, 2021.
Due to rising concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, Universal Studios Japan, along with Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge, temporarily closed on April 25, 2021, before reopening in June of the same year with enhanced health and safety measures in place.
The ride debuted at Universal Studios Hollywood on February 17, 2023, and a similar version is set to open at Universal Epic Universe in the Summer of 2025.
The attraction’s exterior and queue are themed around Bowser's Castle. The story unfolds as guests progress through the queue, revealing that Bowser and the Koopalings (Team Bowser) have challenged Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi (Team Mario) to the Universal Cup.
In the pre-show, guests are given augmented reality visors and guided through the setup process by Lakitu and Mii characters. They enter a room with replica outfits from Mario Kart 8, where Lakitu explains the ride's mechanics. The ride vehicles, modeled after Mario Kart 8 karts, move along a track, with guests using their visors to see Mario characters racing alongside them. Guests can rotate their heads to aim Koopa Shells and press a button on their steering wheel to fire at characters in augmented reality. Riders earn points by hitting Team Bowser characters, and turning in unison at specific points to "drift" into turns can earn them additional points.
The ride takes guests through a variety of locations from Mario Kart 8, including N64 Royal Raceway, GBA Mario Circuit, 3DS Piranha Plant Slide, Dolphin Shoals, Twisted Mansion, Cloudtop Cruise, Wii Grumble Volcano, and Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road. The ride can end with either Team Mario or Team Bowser winning the race, depending on the total points earned.
Point tallies are displayed at the ride's conclusion, similar to Toy Story Mania. Guests can scan their Power-Up Band on the steering wheel to track their high scores in the official Universal Studios smartphone app.
