Once you've decided whether or not you want to quilt the background of your potholder—Sara shows both variations—the next step is to trace your egg shapes onto double-sided fusible web. Sara already has hers cut out with the fusible adhered to the wrong side of the fabric, and she shows how to peel off the backing paper from the fusible web and fuse the appliqué patches to the hot pad's background. She then demonstrates stitching around the appliqués with a satin stitch to finish the edges and make sure they're permanently attached.
After appliquéing, it's time to cut the shape of your potholder, for which Sara traced around a dinner plate. She then shows how to attach bias binding around the outside edge and explains the difference between bias and straight of grain binding types.
