Tepco's 3D modeling of the primary containment vessel (the enclosure within which the reactor core is located) of Unit 3 shows that its contents were blown to pieces. This is inconsistent with the received assumption that the explosion was a hydrogen explosion in the atmosphere of the secondary containment. It is, however, consistent with a ex- or in-vessel steam explosion.
