Microalgae emerge as a promising resource for biofuel production due to their rapid growth rate and unique ability to capture CO2, which can then be converted into biofuels.
Until now, the application of microalgae has been limited by the high expenses associated with their cultivation and the extensive energy consumption for fuel production and upgrade.
The FUELGAE project is developing innovative processes to grow microalgae for efficiently capturing industrial CO2 and converting it into advanced biofuels.
Microalgae test plants will be installed at two industrial sites as a retrofitting solution, integrating a new photobioreactor to capture CO2 emissions from biorefineries and energy-intensive industries.
Through the implementation of new methods and studying new technologies, this pioneering project aims to reduce energy consumption, ensuring the affordability and sustainability of biofuel production.
This innovative biofuel will be analysed to verify its possible application in road, aviation, and maritime transport, promising lower, and even net-zero, CO2 emissions and lower energy consumption.
The FUELGAE project is a collaborative effort by a consortium of twelve leading research and innovation institutions and SMEs and industries from six European countries, led by the Spanish National Research Council.
