Wissenschaft im Dialog | #FSCC21 Panel Discussion: Trust in Science @wissenschaftimdialog | Uploaded July 2021 | Updated October 2024, 9 hours ago.
Panel Discussion "Trust in Science: nurtured, built or earned?" at the Future of Science Communication Conference with with Prof. Dr. Rainer Bromme (University of Münster), Prof. Dr. Maria Baghramian (University College Dublin/PERITIA), Prof. Dr. John Besley (Michigan State University) and Prof. Tracey Brown (Sense About Science), moderated by: Dr. Birte Fähnrich (Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences/Zeppelin University).
Is there a loss of public trust in science? There has been repeated talk for years of a loss of trust, sometimes even a crisis of confidence in which science and research find themselves. The triggers for these debates are often individual events, such as the dispute over nitrogen oxide emission limits, investigative research into pseudo journals, as well as the rise of “alternative facts” and misinformation, even from within the scientific community. However, can the declining trust also be seen in empirical research? Which factors influence trust in researchers and their work? And can trust be generated individually at all?
Wissenschaft im Dialog, the organisation for science communication in Germany, and ALLEA, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, organised the digital conference from 24 - 25 June 2021. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and research, the two-day conference brought together international actors from research and practice of science communication and provided an impetus for stronger networking and transfer between the Science of Science Communication and practitioner communities.
