Science and research should benefit the common good. Still, science communication has been confronted with the problem that its measures do not reach certain target groups and that the scope of its activities is not clearly defined. In order to further promote target group-specific and impact-oriented communication, research and practice of science communication need to investigate general questions: Which target groups are the most crucial to reach? What are the audiences that are currently left out? Which channels can be used to reach certain population groups? And how effective are even the most well-meant formats for underserved audiences – do they really work?
Wissenschaft im Dialog, the organisation for science communication in Germany, and ALLEA, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, organised the digital conference from 24 - 25 June 2021. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and research, the two-day conference brought together international actors from research and practice of science communication and provided an impetus for stronger networking and transfer between the Science of Science Communication and practitioner communities.
