Hello everybody. In my last video I talked about the European union, and I was criticised for not mentioning Frontex. So that is what we are doing here. If you are American you may not know what Frontex is at all. Very basically it’s an agency of the European union that is tasked with securing the Schengen area borders.
The Schengen area is of course the area where you can travel freely from country to country without any border checks. So countries like Germany and Austria rely on other countries to secure their borders, that is why there is an EU funded agency to do that job.
I called it an agency and that is it’s actual name. The EU has task forces called agencies like the Fundamental Rights Agency which is seated in Vienna. There are over 40 agencies seated all over Europe. Frontex which we will discuss today is seated in Warsaw and is officially called the “European Border and Coast Guard Agency”.
You may wonder why I didn’t mention agencies in my EU video. The answer is simple, all 40+ agencies make up less than 1% of the EU budget so they felt minor. Though that % may change as Frontex keeps getting more and more money every year.
When I started researching, I wondered who agencies work for. I just learned the entire structure of the EU government, so I wanted to know. Was it parliament? The European Council? The Council of the European union? The Commission? It was the commission. Remember the commission is the executive so of course they run the border guards.
In this video I will go over what frontex is meant to do and how they present themselves. Then we will refresh our minds about what exactly the relevant refugee and immigrant rights are and then we will look at how frontext deliberately sabotages and undermines every one of these rights and how they are getting away with it. Which, learning why frontex gets away with this, was easily the most shocking thing in political reality I’ve heard about since the collapse of the USSR.

So, what even is frontex? It’s an EU agency we already know that much but how does it work? Is it like ICE in the united states? Do they stand around at borders searching vehicles for drugs guns and illegal immigrants? I would forgive you for thinking so because if you watch any media frontex uploaded to their youtube channel or read any official statement from Frontex you really get the feeling they are a police force.
They are not. They are actually advisors with no real field agents. What happens is that if there are many immigrants or refugees at one spot for some reason, like for example lots of Ukranians entering into Slovakia for a mysterious reason, that might overwhelm the Slovakian border agencies. You see in the EU each country on the perimeter of the Schengen area controls their own borders. But if they are overwhelmed Frontex steps in.
Frontex then offers things like extra equipment for the border agency.
