Welcome back to Hooking Through History, where we unravel the stories behind the stitches and explore the lives of ordinary people throughout history.
In this episode, we travel to the crowded streets of 1880s London, a city at the heart of the British Empire, yet home to extraordinary levels of poverty and hardship. While London was one of the richest cities in the world, an estimated one-third of its population lived hand-to-mouth, never knowing where their next meal would come from.
We'll look at the demographics of Victorian London and examine the very different opportunities available to men, women, and children. Men might find work in factories, docks, construction, transport, or as skilled tradesmen, but employment was often insecure and wages could disappear overnight. Women faced far fewer opportunities, commonly working as domestic servants, laundresses, seamstresses, charwomen, factory workers, street sellers, or taking in piecework from home. Children frequently entered the workforce at a young age to help support their families.
Most importantly, we'll follow the stories of several women whose lives changed dramatically when tragedy struck. A husband with a steady income could mean a modest but stable existence. However, illness, injury, abandonment, alcoholism, imprisonment, or death could leave a woman suddenly alone, responsible for children, and facing destitution. We'll explore how quickly families could slide from respectability into poverty and the difficult choices many women were forced to make simply to survive.
