What happens to all those little stitch swatches once we’ve learned the stitch? We turn them into something wonderful! 🧶💜
For this episode of Stitch & Sip, I want to return to the original purpose behind this series: learning together and building our knitting skills by exploring a huge variety of stitches, techniques and shapes of knitted fabric.
When Stitch & Sip began, I wanted it to be a place where we could try everything—from the simplest beginner stitches to beautiful textures, fascinating construction techniques, stunning lace and, eventually, those wonderfully captivating cables.
But there’s always been one question...
What do we DO with all those swatches?
Well, I have an idea! 😁
Rather than making perfectly identical squares and carefully arranging them into a traditional sampler blanket, I want us to embrace the chaos and create a completely free-form Stitch & Sip sampler blanket.
Imagine long rectangular swatches sitting alongside little squares. Circles meeting oddly shaped pieces. One swatch might be too short, another too long, and two pieces we desperately want beside each other might not fit together at all.
That’s where the fun begins!
We may need to knit an extra edge. We might create a tiny free-form shape just to fill a gap. We could pick up stitches along one piece to make it meet another. Sometimes we'll have to invent a solution as we go.
There are no perfect rows, no identical blocks and no requirement for symmetry.
Over time, all those seemingly unrelated pieces will slowly become one wonderfully chaotic creation—a blanket that tells the story of our knitting journey.
The early sections will remind us of the simpler stitches we learned. Later we'll see our confidence growing as textures become more interesting, lace becomes more intricate and cables begin twisting their way through our fabric.
Eventually, we won't just have a stitch sampler.
We'll have a record of how our knitting skills developed. ❤️
So grab that basket of scrap yarn! Choose one yarn weight—perhaps 3 weight / 8 ply / DK like me, or something finer if that's what you enjoy. Choose one set of needles appropriate for your yarn, and let's see where this adventure takes us.
And eventually?
We may just have created a masterpiece. An heirloom. Something completely unique that we'll cherish forever.
But I don't want another blanket!
