Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Edumakono had to flee to a refugee camp in Tanzania before he eventually made his way to the United States, where he enrolled in UWM's social work program.

"One of the important things I learned in the social work program was that it's not about me. It is about the community. It is about the client," he says.

As a UWM undergrad student, Edumakono started working as a refugee case manager at Catholic Charities, the same institution that helped him upon his arrival. He plans to continue his work there while pursuing his master’s degree.
