Long before carved pumpkins and costumes, ancient Babylon marked the end of the agricultural year with a festival for the dead. It was the season of Baal’s death, the sun deity who fades as winter approaches. This figure, linked to Nimrod of the Tower of Babel, appears across cultures under many names: Anubis and Osiris in Egypt, Hades and Zeus in Greece, Yama in Hindu tradition, and even as the horned Baphomet in modern occult symbolism.
The myth was always the same. As the sun god “dies,” the mother goddess, known as Ishtar, Ashtoreth, Ostara, or Diana of the Ephesians, enters a deep sleep, allowing the dead and dark spirits to roam the earth.
