What happens when you do everything right — exercise, diet, lifestyle — and your body still works against you?
In this episode of Healthy MENtality, I sit down with Barrington, a 55-year-old educator, historian, and African American man of Jamaican descent whose health journey spans more than two decades of serious cardiovascular challenge — and a transformation that is rewriting what's possible in midlife.
Barrington's story isn't a simple weight-loss story. At his worst, his blood pressure was recorded at 250/150 — a level classified as malignant hypertension and associated with stroke, kidney damage, and heart disease. He carried a chronic kidney disease diagnosis for years. He developed central serous retinopathy linked to elevated cortisol and stress. And he carries a markedly elevated lipoprotein(a) of 445 nmol/L — an inherited cardiovascular risk factor most people have never even heard of.
Despite consistent exercise and a disciplined lifestyle, Barrington found himself in his early 50s fighting increasing metabolic resistance, rising visceral fat, and diminishing returns.
In September 2025, he began compounded tirzepatide therapy — not as a cosmetic weight-loss drug, but as what he calls a disease-modifying therapy to address long-term cardiometabolic risk.
The results have been remarkable:
✅ ~30 lbs lost (173 lbs → 143–145 lbs)
✅ Body fat: 14.7% → 6.7%
✅ Visceral fat reduced to essentially zero on DEXA scan
✅ Blood pressure consistently 110/70
✅ Treadmill stress test: 15.4 METs, no ischemia
✅ After 20+ years on metoprolol, his cardiologist is now tapering him off
In this conversation, we go deep on the emotional and psychological cost of living under long-term health uncertainty, what it means to be a gay Black man navigating the healthcare system, the stigma men face around GLP-1 medications, and why Barrington believes cardiometabolic disease must be actively managed — not simply observed.
This episode is for every man who has been told his numbers are "fine" while his body tells a different story.
