Join GHI member Aaron Stash as he shares his journey of converting his 2014 LEED Platinum-certified home to an all-electric, solar powerhouse.
Discover the practical steps and lessons learned from this real-world case study, as Aaron details the process of swapping out gas appliances for their high-efficiency electric counterparts. Originally built with a gas tankless water heater, gas cooktop, and gas dryer, his home now boasts a suite of modern, all-electric systems.
What you'll learn:
The Blueprint for Electrification: See how Aaron converted his home to an all-electric setup, including the installation of a heat pump water heater, an induction stove, and a heat pump dryer.
Heating and Cooling Upgrades: Learn how he integrated air source heat pumps for both ducted heating and cooling on the second floor and a ductless system in the basement, all while remaining on his original 200A electrical service.
The Numbers: Aaron will share his plan to compare utility costs from 2024–2025 (gas + electric) to 2025–2026 (all-electric) to demonstrate the financial benefits or pitfalls of the conversion. We will review Incentives and programs that encourage home electrification (in Illinois): ComEd electrification program, ComEd electric heat distribution rates, expiring US Federal incentives.
This is a unique opportunity to gain insights from a firsthand account of modern home electrification. Aaron will walk you through the challenges and triumphs of the project, offering valuable takeaways for anyone considering a similar upgrade.

Lessons Learned:
1. **Understand** the health benefits of electrification, as switching to high-efficiency electric appliances can lead to improved indoor air quality by eliminating harmful gas emissions, and how this benefits LEED Residential V4.1 Prereq Combustion Venting.
2. **Analyze** the safety advantages of an all-electric home, recognizing that reducing reliance on gas appliances minimizes the risk of fires and gas leaks, and how this benefits LEED Residential V4.1 Prereq EQ Combustion Venting.
3. **Introduce** modern electric systems to enhance welfare, ensuring greater comfort through efficient heating and cooling solutions that adapt to seasonal changes and how it benefits LEED Residential V4.1 Credit EA Annual Energy Performance
4. **Articulate** the importance of monitoring indoor air quality and energy usage, as these practices contribute to a healthier living environment and greater overall well-being.
