Why is the United States declassifying UFO documents right now?
In the final episode of “The Alien Files: What Is America Hiding?”, we trace the history of UFOs from ancient signs in the sky to the modern archives of the CIA, the Pentagon, the FBI, and NASA.
Long before people used terms like “unidentified flying object” or “unidentified anomalous phenomenon,” they spoke of chariots of fire, celestial signs, orbs, and strange lights. But across different eras, was humanity describing completely different phenomena — or continually searching for new words to describe the same unknown?
In this documentary episode, we examine the vision of the prophet Ezekiel, Elijah’s chariot of fire, the celestial phenomena reported over Nuremberg in 1561 and Basel in 1566. We are not claiming that ancient religious texts describe extraterrestrial spacecraft. Instead, we compare the ways people from different periods recorded encounters with phenomena for which they had no appropriate language or technical concepts.
The story then takes us to J. Allen Hynek — the astronomer hired by the U.S. Air Force to help explain reports of “flying saucers.” After years of working with Project Blue Book, the skeptic began arguing that some cases deserved serious scientific investigation.
We also explore the ideas of Jacques Vallée, who has suggested that the phenomenon may be far older and more complex than a simple story of visitors from another planet. Fairies, spirits, chariots of fire, mysterious airships, flying saucers, and modern-day orbs — different forms appearing across different cultures and historical periods.
Today, the subject is once again entering laboratories and universities. Scientists such as Garry Nolan, Kevin Knuth, and Avi Loeb argue that unexplained phenomena should be measured, observed, and analyzed rather than automatically ridiculed. Harvard’s Galileo Project uses optical, infrared, radio, and acoustic sensors to collect independent data on aerial anomalies.
But if UFOs are now taken seriously enough to warrant scientific advisory groups, Senate hearings, and official government portals, why was the subject turned into a joke for decades?
The answer takes us back to a CIA scientific advisory panel convened in 1953. The documents show that the concern was not limited to the objects being reported. Public interest, sensational media coverage, and the possibility that the subject could be exploited to create panic and distrust were also seen as problems.
The panel recommended systematically reducing the mystery surrounding “flying saucers” through the use of media, psychologists, writers, and educational productions.
