More traditional than you think! In the Bronze Age this is exactly how our ancestors negotiated coastal shores and inland waterways on long, dished wooden boards carved from tree trunks with paddles for steering and power. You may see nice examples of this in museum exhibits around the island and you can also visit reconstructed Crannogs - circular, thatched homes built on stilts in the middle of lakes and loughs. There's a very practical working example at Castle Espie Nature Reserve on Strangford Lough near Comber Town in County Down.
The lady here has found N Ireland landscapes and culture to be very attractive, so much so she has picked up a local accent and decided to call it home for good. She has made good local friends and is active in the local community - when not paddle boarding!
