In 1964, thirteen-year-old Robert “Kool” Bell, his brother Ronald, and five high-school friends in Jersey City formed an instrumental band called the Jazziacs.. They changed their name to Kool & the Flames in 1967, then Kool & the Gang in 1969 to avoid confusion with James Brown's Famous Flames. In 1979 James (J.T) Taylor joined as lead singer and they moved away from funk and closer to rhythm & blues and pop music. They cut the LP Ladies’ Night, released the song as a single and it became their first international hit. For a CBC Vancouver Television 1981 series, the Gang performed their Top 10 hit, Ladies’ Night.
