I know I'm coming late to this, but I think there's a story here for me about not having this as my first book by Emezi. I might never have read The Death of Vivek Oji if I had read Freshwater first.

There is something here about the way publishers promote new authors by appealing directly to the kind of wishy-washy liberal reader that I am. Some of you may be also. This may be the best way to establish an author and build a following, but it still feels like we are being marketed to.

I understand why Emezi launched their career with Freshwater, but I think, over time, we will come to see that it is not their best work.
