Modeling of a French Model 1816 cuirassier sword of the post-Napoleonic period. These swords, as the name suggests, were used exclusively by cuirassiers in the French army. Cuirassiers were the heaviest cavalry still utilized in the era of black powder line infantry warfare, wearing helmets and cuirasses atop very large horses. The most distinctive features of this weapon were it's blade length and large brass basket-hilt. These swords were not intended for chopping, as their blade geometry included two fullers and a very shallow edge. They were designed to be as long as possible for piercing, slashing, and thrusting. They were quite cumbersome to utilize on foot, and impractical as a dueling weapon.
During the War of the Sixth Coalition (1812-1814) and Seventh Coalition (1815) it was reported that many Prussian cuirassiers took a liking to the French design, often discarding their state-issued cavalry swords to replace them with the French ones. It was so popular, in fact, that the Prussian cuirassier regiments continued using this model until the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, where the Prussians again resorted to using captured swords from their French counterparts.
This model was designed in Blender 4.1.1. in the 1/35 scale. Total modeling time came in at 2 hours and 40 minutes.
