Are we really free to make our own choices?
Most people on either side of the Calvinism debate will probably say that we have freedom to make our own choices. However—when we start to define free will, we find that we have different definitions. Free will might mean free will, and it might not.
We have two definitions of free will:
Libertarian free will - We have the freedom to choose one thing or another. We could have chosen differently than we did.
Compatibilism - Our free will is compatible with God's determinism. In the end, compatibilism is not really free will at all--it is simply determinism that feels like freedom.
I believe that the Bible teaches libertarian free will--we can freely make our own choices and deal with the consequences. However, the Bible is also clear that God's plan will ultimately be fulfilled. God's sovereignty is so powerful that He can work through our free will to accomplish His plans. This is, in my opinion, a stronger view of sovereignty than we find in the Calvinist system.
