As described by the World Health Organisation, One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that can help to address the full spectrum of disease control โ€” from prevention to detection, preparedness, response and management โ€” and contribute to global health security. The approach can be applied at the community, subnational, national, regional, and global levels and relies on shared and effective governance, communication, collaboration and coordination.

Viewed through this lens, One Health can serve as a blueprint for strategic resilience in line with an integrated systems approach, linking key determinants such as health, environment, technology and the wider ecosystem. In this conversation, Professor Paolo Dario and Professor Andy Poh explore how ecosystem thinking, intelligent technologies and interdisciplinary elements can converge to shape enhanced health outcomes and more sustainable futures. Together, they reflect on encompassing strategic elements, including systems integration, emerging technologies, data intelligence, predictive capabilities, foresight and future planning, new partnership models etc., which can contribute to embedding One Health principles into the future design of health systems.

Professor Paolo Dario, honoured as the father of biorobotics, is Emeritus Professor at the Biorobotics Institute at the Santโ€™Anna School of Advanced Studies in Italy. He innovated techniques in the practical application of robotics in engineering and medicine. He was one of the main proposers of bio-inspired sensors, devices and medical applications of robotics, at a time when they were unknown to most roboticists. His pioneering work in tactile sensing and artificial perception for robots enabled cybernetic prostheses that directly interfaced with the nervous system. He contributed to the development of neurorobotics, to expand the capability of human-robot interaction and empower the robot with human intelligence.

Professor Andy Poh is an international Healthcare Strategy Expert, Senior Executive and Advisor with a career spanning government and industry. He advises on system-level transformation, policy, innovation, population health, public private partnerships, emerging technologies and trends as well as future readiness across healthcare impact domains. He has been longstanding Advisor in the Prime Ministerโ€™s Office of the United Arab Emirates. Earlier, he worked in the Government of Dubai at the Dubai Health Authority with roles of strategic transformation and business innovation. Prior to the UAE, he worked in Singapore and China as Vice President and General Manager of a listed healthcare group, with experience in healthcare management and overseas market expansion via greenfield and brownfield growth. His appointments include: Senior Advisor to World Scientific, Senior Advisor to Health System Intelligence, Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham, Senior Fellow to Japanโ€™s Health & Global Policy Institute and Member of the Panel of Community Advisors to Honour Singapore.
