On a recent western Caribbean cruise our cruise ship stopped at the popular destination of Costa Maya (Mahahual, Quintana Roo, Mexico). In recent years the Costa Maya Mexico cruise port has grown to become one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean. On the day we stopped in Costa Maya there were four cruise ships docked. Ships docked in Costa Maya included the Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas, MSC Seashore, Sky Princess and the TUI Mein Schiff 6. The combined maximum passenger capacity of these four ships is a whopping 19,010 people, and that doesn’t include the crew (which some can get off in most ports).
The Costa Maya cruise port may have been developed to accommodate a high volume of visitors, however in our opinion four ships at one time was just too many. Checkout our video tour of the Costa Maya cruise port to see the port as well as what it’s like when there are four good sized cruise ships in port. We have visited the Costa Mayan port many times in the past and this was the busiest we’ve ever seen it. It’s certainly more enjoyable with one or two ships in port, not four! The Costa Maya port offers a ton of shopping opportunities as well as large public restrooms, bars, huge swimming pool, wave simulator, Dolphin Discovery, Aviarius aviary and easy access to cabs, busses and rental cars.
