Fort Harrison was part of a hundred mile string of fortifications which protected the approaches to Richmond from the East and South. In a surprise attack designed to puncture the lines between Richmond and Petersburg, Fort Harrison fell on September 29th 1864. As frequently happened, Black Union Soldiers were the assault troops. The gallantry of these troops that day led to the awarding of 14 Congressional Medals of Honor.
