[CHARACTER BIOS - SPOILERS BELOW]
flowey the flower is the main antagonist of undertale. he’s the first enemy you encounter in the game, posing as a fake tutorial. however, he uses this opportunity to tell you his law of the land, which is kill or be killed. after the player is saved by toriel, flowey will continue to stalk and follow the player around the underground all the way until they fight the king, asgore dreemurr. flowey jumps in last minute and slays the king, able to obtain all previous human souls the king was hiding, and becomes photoshop flowey, an abomination of stock assets that’s taken over the world. he becomes able to override the save file of the player, now loading and saving over your own demise over and over again. he was originally the son of asgore and toriel, unoriginally named asriel dreemurr. one day, a human fell into the underground where all monsters reside. they were taken in by the dreemurr family and became asriel’s adopted sibling. after the two misread a recipe that got their father very sick, the human made a plan to free monsterkind. they ate so much of a poisonous flower that they passed away, asriel then agreeing to take their soul and cross the barrier to the surface world, where he would gain enough power to break the barrier by killing humans. however, asriel couldn’t bring himself to kill the humans of the surface, turning back and passing away from the humans’ attacks on a bed of flowers. years later, the royal scientist dr. alphys would experiment with a substance called determination, the power that allowed humans to persist after death. she wanted to know what would happen if something neither human nor monster gained the will to live. so, she took a flower from the garden where asriel had died and injected it with determination. after a few days, the flower strangely was gone.
monika is the president of the literature club in doki doki literature club. she serves as the tutorial of the game, giving tips and tricks to the player as they converse with the other girls in the club, them being the childhood friend sayori, the bratty natsuki, and the quiet girl yuri. ddlc is a dating game where the player makes choices and poems to romance one of those three girls. upon getting closer to sayori, it’s revealed that she has severe depression. no matter what, the player is helpless to get her through this, and she ends up taking her own life. the game can no longer function without one of the girls, so the entire code becomes broken and the game is forced to reset, trying to continue along with the usual dating simulator. this new world continues to crack and fracture under the pressure, with natsuki and yuri continuing to get more and more extreme. monika continues being herself, informing the player of strange, personal details about the girls’ flaws and insecurities. eventually, the player is forced alone with yuri. she completely snaps, plunging a knife into her torso in front of the player. monika returns three days later, surprised the game’s code was that broken, and decides to just take things in her own hands. it turns out that monika has been aware she exists in a video game the whole time. she’s been tweaking and tampering with the girls’s emotions and extremes behind the scenes, trying to make them unlikable, and causing the game to glitch and bug out. her goal was to have the player fall in love with her, but she’s trapped in a game where that outcome is impossible. the only way out is the player deleting monika.
