One of the reasons why the U-Sand random orbital sander works as well as it does is that the people who developed it actually have experience in refinishing hardwood floors. So beginning in their own workshop, they set out to invent something that would make the whole process easier and less expensive.
Under the old system, a homeowner had to go out and rent three tools – a drum sander, an edger and a buffer. Even then, there was always the chance that he or she might make a mistake that could cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars to repair. For these reasons, most people faced with the task of refinishing floors usually went out and hired a professional.
Now, the U-Sand changes all that. First, it eliminates the need for three machines. The U-Sand does the work of a drum sander, edger and buffer all at the same time. If you’ve ever done this type of work before, you’ll be amazed at how well the U-Sand works even in the tight spots – in closets, around baseboard molding, etc.
The U-Sand also eliminates the need to worry about the grain of the wood. The four random orbit buffers will do the job the right way no matter which way the grain runs. And because the U-Sand employs random orbit technology, the danger of making a mistake that might ruin the floor is virtually eliminated.
Two other benefits to the U-Sand are plainly apparent the moment you start using it. First, the U-Sand is designed with a vacuum system and bag built in. This substantially reduces the amount of dust left behind. And because it weighs only 120 pounds, you’ll find the U-Sand is much easier to move around, and up stairs, than older, heavier drum sanders.
They also want to pass along a couple of important tips to would-be do-it-yourselfers. First, remember that it’s important to clean up well after each sanding. Use a vacuum, and then go back over the surface with mineral spirits and a tack cloth to make sure you’ve removed most of the dust.
Also, read the manufacturer’s instructions both on the stain and the polyurethane you’re using. With regard to the polyurethane, note the amount of time the manufacturer recommends for drying in between coats. Failure to allow enough drying time could cause the polyurethane to wrinkle.
