How to Multiply Your House Plants Through Propagation
There are several ways to propagate houseplants. The method you use will depend on the type of plant your are propagating. Remember, that regardless of which method you use, you will need to keep your new plants in a humid environment until they are established. A bell jar, or a simple plastic bag supported by a coat hanger, will work well for this purpose.
- Plants like Ferns en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fern can be easily divided by cutting. Use an old kitchen knife to section out the plant. Repot each segment in its own planter.
- Plants like Philodendron en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philodendron have aerial rootlets en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerial_root. For plants like this, simply cut off a section containing a leaf and some rootlets. Plant the rootlets beneath the soil.
- If you are taking cuttings from cacti, you will need to let the cutting sit in a dry area until a callus/root layer is formed (about 4 weeks). After the callus has formed, simply plant the cutting in well-drained soil.
- Plants like Violets, Jade plants, Peperomia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peperomia and Coleus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleus; leaf cutting can be made. With a sharp clean knife, cut off a single leaf (leave some of the stem). Dip the tip of the stem into rooting hormone, or indolebutyric acid. Using a pencil, poke a hole into a 1-inch layer of moist vermiculite. Place the cuttings in the holes.
- Other plants, like Kalanchoe bit.ly/3gruJRD, will actually grow small plants off the leaves. Place a leaf on a moist piece of paper, and keep the paper moist until new growth appears. Next, trim off the paper and plant the leaf in good potting soil.
