Flock Safety reportedly proposed turning Uber and Lyft drivers into a mobile surveillance network by using vehicle-mounted cameras to scan license plates as drivers traveled around their cities.

Could Uber and Lyft drivers become part of a massive mobile surveillance network?
Flock Safety, a company known for its network of automatic license plate recognition cameras, reportedly pitched a plan that would use Uber and Lyft drivers' vehicles to dramatically expand its license plate scanning capabilities.
The concept reportedly involved equipping gig workers' vehicles with cameras capable of scanning license plates as drivers traveled around their cities, effectively creating mobile extensions of an existing network of fixed cameras.
That's potentially hundreds of thousands of vehicles constantly traveling through neighborhoods, parking lots, downtown areas, highways, and everywhere in between.

There's also an important detail: Uber reportedly rejected the proposal.
