In this flintknapping tutorial, I work a large chunk of Fort Payne chert and demonstrate the process of reducing big raw stone into a workable biface. The rock is labeled so you can see exactly what material we’re working with, and I walk through the techniques used to safely and efficiently break down large chert.

This video is designed as a beginner-friendly demonstration, but experienced knappers may also enjoy seeing how Fort Payne chert behaves during early stage reduction. I explain platform preparation, flake direction, and strategies for controlling large flakes when starting with a big piece of raw stone.

Fort Payne chert is a classic southeastern knappable material known for its quality and workability, and it’s a great stone for learning reduction techniques.
