Preparing an upcoming tutorial... I start just moving around the nice viewport in 2021.1 and decided to record a video to showcase the preformance you can expect with a budget laptop.
The scene is an imported solidworks model, converted directly in max, with over 14Milion polygons and 3625 lego pieces. I am featuring some of the news in the viewport in max 2021.1:
-Vignetting.
-Depth of field on background.
-Matte shadow on viewport.
During this recording I had premiere open, another 3dsmax instance open with the same scene loaded, and chrome with multiple tabs open, as well OBS recording. On the video you can see some clamply movement that is not visible even during recording. Without OBS the fps I get:
-On realistic mode: 15-20 fps
-On "Standard": 30-50 fps
I get very nice results with just a couple of seconds of viewport refinement. Textures are set to 4K resolution (I have only an HDRI as texture on environment). The scene is light with the HDRI (3dsmax does IBL illumination on viewport, so HDRI affects lighting on scene), and one Photometric light casting shadows. (Just to add a more contrast shadow, you can just light it with the HDRI alone). 2X antialias.
My laptop is a Msi gp62. 6700 HQ, a gtx 960M, I upgrade it from 16 to 32 Gb.
Was a budget laptop launched in 2015, so its already 5 years old. I bought it second hand 3 years ago for 500$ USD, and have been using it at home for 3d. Thats to illustrate as well that you dont need to spend a huge amount of money to start in 3d.
