The difference between a super-fast SSD and a low-cost one with lots of storage is the NAND flash memory that’s inside. It powers your SSDs, USB drives, even your phone, storing data even after the power goes out. But it’s not all the same. The biggest difference is how much data each memory cell holds, which affects speed, lifespan, and cost.

SLC: Single-level cell
This variety of NAND is the overachiever. Each cell stores a single bit of data, making it very fast and reliable. Imagine every piece of data has its own private house: high performance, but also high price. SLC is typically used in high-end or enterprise settings, where performance really matters.

MLC: Multi-level cell
This variety of NAND is more practical. Each cell stores two bits of data instead of one. Roommates, if you like. Storage is more efficient and lower cost, but the system has to work harder to keep things accurate, sacrificing speed and endurance for a nice balance between performance and price.

TLC: Triple-level cell
This is what most people use today. These cells are crowded, with three bits of data each. That does mean you get a lot of storage for a lower cost, making it popular for consumer SSDs. However, the density of data means it’s not as fast or long-lasting as SLC or even MLC NAND. The more bits you store per cell, the cheaper and bigger your storage gets at the cost of speed and durability.

3D NAND
This innovation flips the script somewhat. It changes how the cells are built instead of what goes into them. Instead of houses, these engineers built skyscrapers, meaning more storage, better efficiency, and improved reliability, while avoiding shrinking everything down. Most modern SSDs today use 3D NAND, which is pushing storage forward.

The takeaway? SLC is premium, high-performance NAND. MLC is a balanced option. TLC is the workhorse everyday option with top capacity and value. 3D NAND is the technological evolution of the form stacking things up and maximizing space. Those are your trade-offs: speed, lifespan, and cost. Now the next time you see different NAND options, you’ll know what they mean!
