Why turning one instrument up makes another disappear, and how to fix it properly.
When two sounds fight for the same space, turning one up buries the other, and turning it back down makes the whole mix go flat. Most people try to fix this by carving big EQ holes, but that guts the sound.
Here's the better way. Put a frequency analyser on both and find where they pile up. That's your clash. Then decide who wins in that moment of the song. The vocal in the chorus. The kick on the drop. Whatever the track needs.
Put a dynamic EQ or compressor on the loser and side-chain it from the winner. When the winner plays, the loser ducks. When the winner stops, the loser comes back full. Both sounds stay alive and the focus stays exactly where you want it.
Which two sounds always fight in your mixes? Drop it in the comments.
