Join us today at Monumental Lodge No. 3 of the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW). This national organization got started in 1898 in Ohio because the older Elks organization, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, was a whites-only fraternal organization. In 1900, Monumental Lodge No. 3 was founded in Baltimore. One of the main focuses of its members was fighting for Black Civil Rights in this city and on the national level. Thanks for watching and see you next week with another Five Minute Histories video.

This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and YouTube channel.
