Today I’m taking my 12-ton, 6-wheel vintage Aveling Barford motor grader down the new 3km mountain road I built last year with my old excavator and bulldozer. This is the first time the grader has been down the driveway, and it’s a tight squeeze in places!
The goal: smooth out the bumps and shape the road so rainwater runs off into the ditches.
The reality: a few unexpected dramas along the way…
A flat tyre that needed changing (with help from the tractor loader — those wheels are heavy!)

Two burst hydraulic lines that I had to repair mid-job
Plenty of challenges keeping the grader moving on a steep, narrow mountain road
Despite the breakdowns, the grader managed to make the road smoother, safer, and much nicer to drive on.
I love giving old machines a second life, and this vintage grader is no exception. Hope you enjoy the adventure!
