A few special moments from the first sea turtle release of the season! 🥰🥹🐢
After months of rehabilitation at our Sea Turtle Hospital, 12 sea turtles were released this week into the waters off Cape Cod.
These five Kemp’s ridleys, four loggerheads, and three green sea turtles were among nearly 500 cold-stunned turtles rescued from Cape Cod beaches last winter. Our team treated them for serious conditions including pneumonia, dehydration, and trauma before clearing them for release.
Before their release, researchers from our Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life fitted the turtles with satellite and acoustic tags to help us learn more about sea turtle behavior, habitat use, and survival in New England waters.
A huge thank you to the staff, volunteers, interns, researchers, veterinarians, and partners who helped make this milestone possible. While we're celebrating these 12 turtles, 29 more are still receiving care and will be released later this summer once they're medically cleared.
