As of today’s date, Chicago’s “State/Lake” Station has officially closed down. Having provided service to Chicago residents since its opening on September 22, 1895, the modest structure is one of the oldest on the CTA system and will now be dismantled as part of a significant replacement/modernization project. Once completed, the brand-new State/Lake station will to have a much larger footprint, offer better protection from the weather with a massive glass canopy, gain several accessibility improvements, and much more. CTA currently anticipates opening the new State/Lake Station in 2029. Trains on the Orange Line, Green Line, Brown Line, Pink Line, and Purple Line will now bypass this location during reconstruction. CTA suggests that passengers instead utilize Clark/Lake Station or Washington/Wabash Station.
