A Norfolk Southern train is seen exiting the west portal of the company’s Allegheny Tunnel at Gallitzin, Pennsylvania on a misty early-October evening in 2016. Constructed by the Pennsylvania Railroad between 1851 and 1854, the tunnel is 3,600ft (or 1,100m) in length! In the 1990s, Conrail enlarged the original tunnel from a single-track to double-track configuration and added capacity for double-stacked container trains, too. Closely-numbered C44-9Ws Nos. 9283 and 9281 put out a deafening roar pulling this train up the grade! Both locomotives have since been rebuilt to AC44C6M specifications and renumbered.
