August 12, 2002 - In this week’s First Chapter Friday video I read the first chapter of the National Book Award Winner from 2011, Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine, who grew up in Europe, Africa, Canada, and the United States, and was a lawyer before becoming an author. Make sure you stay through the whole video so you can discover the secret book quote hidden throughout… one word at a time, like a literary treasure hunt.

Book Blurb: Caitlin has Asperger's. The world according to her is black and white; anything in between is confusing. Before, when things got confusing, Caitlin went to her older brother, Devon, for help. But Devon was killed in a school shooting, and Caitlin's dad is so distraught that he is just not helpful. Caitlin wants everything to go back to the way things were, but she doesn't know how to do that. Then she comes across the word closure--and she realizes this is what she needs. And in her search for it, Caitlin discovers that the world may not be so black and white after all. THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER and ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NOVELS OF OUR TIME FOR YOUNG READERS

Trigger Warning: the main character’s brother dies in a school shooting. Teachers please know your student, audience, school and community before sharing this book with your students and be prepared to have discussions and offer resources related to this relevant, but scary topic.

Here are a few I have found from the American School Counselor Association: schoolcounselor.org/Publications-Research/Publications/Free-ASCA-Resources/After-a-School-Shooting
