There is something about watching baby goats take their first hops on their second day alive that immediately lifts your spirits. I could tell when I went out this morning and found them jumping around their stall that they were ready for some playtime in the barn.
They got right to it, and had a great time setting the tone for all the other goats to come! (How fun to imagine the whole barn filled with babies.)
But for now, it’s exciting to be able to watch these triplets closely. You can almost see their brains willing their bodies to leave the ground.
Amelia Bedelia wins the prize so far for the hoppiest. She is pure joy and is constantly chatting with her mum. All three are so friendly and already walking right up to people for attention.
While the kids played, we also got an opportunity to take care of Thistle. I wasn’t able to do her hooves at the end of her pregnancy because she was so big. I felt like it would be uncomfortable for her. So today we did all four hooves up nice and tidy, milked her in one side to even up her udder, brushed her, and gave her some ivermectin. She was very patient. Sometimes after kidding, a goat’s immunity can drop as they put so much energy into the kids, so we have made it a habit to take extra good care of them in a couple days following kidding.
There is so much heaviness in the world. How wonderful to watch baby goats defy gravity and embrace the day with such buoyant joy! It’s contagious! Hope they make you smile!
